EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
